It was a banner day for the Hays High School UIL team, winning the Sweepstakes trophy at the recent Lehman High-hosted Academic Meet. The Rebs rolled to no less than five team event wins in the early UIL season meet, including top showings in Number Sense, Calculator, Mathematics, Accounting and Computer Applications.

In addition, Silas Brown claimed “Top Chemistry” title for the meet.

The Lehman High School highlight was a 1-2-3-4 sweep in the Computer Science event, helping boost the hosts to a fourth in Sweepstakes competition. In addition to the cross-district Rebs, the Lobos hosted teams from Canyon, Luling, Liberty, East Central, Liberty Hill, Del Valle and Navarro.

The Rebs’ Number Sense combination of Brad Weber, Roderick Hunt and Emily Crowell were individually third, fourth and sixth. Lauren Wisener and Hunt were third and fifth in their Calculator team win, with help from teammate Jessica Scott.  Erin Korzeniewski and Patti Swanson were individually fourth and sixth in the Mathematics win, with help from Silas Brown.

In one of Hays’ historically strongest areas, its Accounting team was highlighted by an amazing 1-2-3-4 showing from Jon Brazeal, Aysia Lopez, John Effiom and Casie Lomeli, respectively. And the Computer Applications (BCIS) team win came courtesy of Brooke Noble’s first, Amber Thompson’s fourth and Melissa Harvell’s sixth.

Lehman’s winning Computer Science team sweep of first through fourth was through the efforts of (1) Trevor Leffert, (2) Samantha Williamson, (3) Cameron Harris, and (4) Amanda Markert, with additional help from Donald Schiwitz and Marcus Casillas.

Additional Hays places in the Sweepstakes win included the following: Reading Writing: (3) Hannah Thompson, (5) Hope Hoffmeyer, (6) Gabi Buentello; Literary Criticism: (4) Hope Hoffmeyer, (6) Sarah Staub; Computer Science: (5) Dakota Whipple, (6) John Hatch.

Lehman finished second in team competition for Mathematics, Siggy Santana taking fifth individually. The Lobos also had a team second in Science, Madeleine Hewitt taking fourth individually. Additional Lehman places included Michelle Williamson and Lauren Lemangue, second  and fourth, respectively, in Spelling; and Siggy Santana, fifth in Number Sense.
