Buda Bits
by SANDRA GRIZZLE

In late 1983, a group of residents from Buda and the surrounding area began making plans for a non-profit association that might benefit the community and older citizens in particular. An organizational meeting was held Jan. 24, 1984, at the Buda Primary School. A nine-member board of directors was elected and on March 10, 1984, bylaws were approved by a vote of the membership. Hence, Onion Creek Senior Citizens, Inc. was established with membership open to anyone in the Buda area.

In the summer of 1986, Bob Barton deeded a partnership interest in some land he owned at Barton’s Crossing on FM 2770 to the senior citizens and traded better adjoining land to the county, with the requirement that it be leased to the senior citizens for a small fee. County officials then agreed to move a metal building from the old San Marcos Hospital grounds to the site in Buda. With the help of the county and hard work of many members and with help and generosity of the community, the site was reworked and the building refurbished, so that the third annual meeting was held in the new senior center on March 14, 1987. Today, county offices for justice of the peace, treasurer and law enforcement share with the seniors the site at the corner of Barton’s Crossing and FM 2770 in Buda.

On Thurs., March 11, the 27th annual membership meeting of the Onion Creek Senior Citizens will be held. A business meeting will start at 9:30 a.m., followed by a live auction at 10:45 a.m.  A beef and chicken fajita lunch will be served at 12:15 for a cost of $7. The public is invited to attend the auction and lunch.

Dahlstrom Middle School principal, Hilda Gartzke, has announced that she will be retiring at the end of this school year. Gartzke has served as principal for the past seven years at Dahlstrom and prior to that was a counselor at Hays High School for nine years.   With her first grandchild arriving in June, she will be very busy as a new “grandmother.” We all wish her a happy retirement.
