Let the summer begin

By Sandra Grizzle

The last day of school for thousands of our children is this Friday, so let the summer fun begin.

Movies in the park will be held every Friday night in June at Buda City Park. The movie on June 6 will be “Frozen” which is rated PG. Show time is 9 p.m. with free admission and paid concessions will be available.  Be sure to bring a lawn chair, blanket and cooler for an evening under the stars.

•••

A free breakfast will be served at the Onion Creek Senior Center in Buda on Tuesday, June 10, from 8:30 until 9:30 a.m.  Village on the Park Onion Creek sponsors the breakfast.  Call the center at 512-295-3413 (leave message) to RSVP.

•••

Following the noon lunch on Thursday, June 12, at the Onion Creek Senior Center,  the Hays County Historical Commission will show its latest documentary.  The public is welcome to attend to hear the story of Col. Peter Woods, who came to San Marcos in 1851, started a cotton plantation and decided to form the 32nd Texas Volunteer Cavalry, C.S.A. during the Civil War. He was a physician who survived the war and lived the rest of this life as a country doctor and also developed much of San Marcos and Hays County.

•••

More upcoming events will be the 118th Camp Ben McCulloch Confederate Reunion held on the 40-acre site on the banks of Onion Creek near Driftwood. This year’s reunion starts Friday, June 20 and runs until Friday, June 27. Throughout the week, there will be music, dancing, camping swimming (there is water in Onion Creek!), food, carnival, bingo and just good times visiting. For a compete schedule of the events, visit www.CampBen.com

Coming up on Saturday, June 28, members of the Onion Creek Senior Citizens, along with their sponsor, United Heritage Credit Union, will offer Casino Night. The public is invited to join this 2nd annual event held at the Senior Center at 420 Barton’s Crossing. Check in time is 6:30 p.m., with the play from 7 to 10 p.m. For ticket information, please call 512-295-3413 (leave message); 512-468-4451 or email kymnavarro@yahoo.com or sgrizzle@austin.rr.com
