It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved Alex Verver, 62, of Buda, known to many as “Hondo.” Alex was called home to be with his Heavenly Father on his birthday, Aug. 6, 2014. He was preceded in death by his parents, Juanita and Teodoro Verver. He is survived by his two brothers and their spouses, Lee and Angie Verver, Sonny Sr. and Linda Verver; sons, A.J. Verver and wife Sue Gage, T.J. Verver; grandchildren, Mikayla and Tee Verver; devoted partner, Rosemary Rayos.
Born on Aug. 6, 1952, Alex was a lifelong resident of Buda, Texas. His passions were classic cars, team roping and deer hunting. As a young man he learned mechanics from his father. Using that knowledge, he created several of his own hot rods. He later took up team roping and deer hunting, hobbies he shared with his sons.
Alex had a successful career in the electrical field after learning the trade from his father. In 1978, he went to work alongside his brothers at Verver Electric. From there he served the City of Austin as Electrical Inspector starting in January of 1986. He dedicated 23 years to the City of Austin and retired as Chief Electrical Inspector.
In 1985, he joined the Knights of Columbus of Santa Cruz Catholic Church as a charter member. He participated in countless benefits and fundraisers, helping those in need. If there was a way to help, “Hondo” was always there.
He was a simple man with a heart the size of Texas. He would give you the shirt off his back if you needed it, never asking for anything in return. He believed God would give him “heaven credits;” he earned his share. Hard work, respect and helping others are the values that he lived by and instilled in his sons. He loved his family and friends very much and it was the little things in life that made him happy. In one of his last conversations with his sons, he said, “Boys, I’ve had a great life and I’ve put myself in God’s hands.”
Visitation and a rosary was held at Harrell Funeral Home in Kyle on Monday, Aug. 11. A mass was held at Santa Cruz Catholic Church in Buda on Tuesday, Aug. 12. In lieu of flowers the family would like to ask that donations be made to Hospice of Austin.
