Lupe Carbajal, local San Marcos businessman and long-time friend of former Hays Free Press publisher Bob Barton, is interested in getting local businesses together to start a Bob and Wynette Barton scholarship at Texas State University.
Barton worked in the newspaper business from the day he bought the Kyle News in the 1950s while he was attending then Southwest Texas State Teachers College. He continued until the month of his death, walking in to the downtown Kyle newspaper office to deliver his column.
Anyone interested in participating in this scholarship drive should contact Cyndy Slovak-Barton (csb@haysfreepress.com).

Santa is all around these days, and local businesses will be welcoming jolly old Saint Nick in both Buda and Kyle. Santa arrives in Kyle for the annual Tree Lighting Ceremony Dec. 3. Then, Mr. and Mrs. Claus will head over to Buda for Budafest. They will be around all weekend long. In both towns, businesses can be seen dressing up storefronts in anticipation of the increased local traffic.
