It was a tough game for the Lehman Lady Lobos basketball team Friday night as they hosted the Westlake Lady Chaparrals. Though the score was close early in the game, the Lady Chaparrals overpowered the Lady Lobos in a 70-35 win.
The first two quarters saw low scores on both ends. Halfway through the first quarter, the score was just 2-0 Chaparrals. Lady Lobos Lauren Fowler and Kayla Martinez knocked down a few shots and kept Lehman within five, down just 9-14 at the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, scoring was almost identical. The twin sister duo Brooke and Bailey Holle hit shots from all over the court for the Lady Chaps. Lehman continued having trouble scoring against Westlake’s zone defense and found themselves down 17-28 at the end of the first half.
Westlake started firing on all cylinders at the beginning of the second half. The twins continued to knock down shots with help from guard Lexi Cunningham. The Lady Chaps turned defensive rebounds into full-court passes that led to layups.
The Lady Lobos got some big bench points from Kayla Johnson. She came off the bench and hit multiple three-pointers in an effort to get her team back in the game, but it wasn’t enough. Johnson finished with nine points, the second highest on the team.
Fowler also tried to lead the Lady Lobos back, but Westlake sped ahead and didn’t look back in the second half. The Lady Chaps outscored Lehman 24-5 in the third quarter and led 53-22 going into the fourth.
The final quarter wasn’t much better, as the Holle twins continued their dominance on the court.
“No matter where they are on the court, [the twins] have a shot,” Fowler said after the game.
The Holle twins scored a majority of Westlake’s points. Brooke led the team with 20 while Bailey adding 19 points, eight rebounds and six assists.
Lehman Coach Jamie Coy, though clearly disappointed by the loss, summed up the Westlake game plan.
“They hit the three. They started off in a driving game and when we stopped that they went to a drive and kick-out to shooters game. They made a lot of shots,” said Coy.
Fowler and Johnson were the high scoring players for Lehman, with Fowler leading the team at 11 points. Starr Rivers also added four points and was a force on the glass as she pulled down several offensive and defensive rebounds.
The Lady Lobos will face off against Bowie on Tuesday, at home in the Lobo Den.
