Staff Report on August 13, 2015
Spirit of ’45 Day honors World War II veterans

Submitted Report

On Saturday, Aug. 15, the Commemorative Air Force (CAF) Central Texas Wing, area Chambers of Commerce and local businesses are sponsoring a Spirit of ‘45 Day at the CAF Hangar located at the San Marcos Airport. This 70th anniversary of the end of WWII may be the last opportunity to say “Thank you!” to the men and women of our “Greatest Generation.”

The organizers are seeking veterans of WWII to honor at the event. A special ceremony will be held to recognize veterans and to personally thank them for their service. Community leaders, business owners, families, children and all in attendance will share their appreciation for veterans’ sacrifice and service to others.

Know a WWII veteran that may be available to attend the Aug. 15 event? Submit their information to Tim Black, Central Texas Wing Leader at centraltexaswing@gmail.com or (512) 396-1943.

Spirit of ’45 Day offers an opportunity for the general public to reflect on the extraordinary achievements and timeless values that are the legacy of these “ordinary heroes” who endured the difficult times of the Great Depression, achieved victory in WWII, and then undertook an unprecedented effort to assure a better future for their children and their children’s children, for former ally and foe alike.

The event will include a car show, children activities, war birds on display, Living History Flights, food and much more. For the complete list of activities, visit the event page at www.spiritof45centex.com.

In addition to the events held at the CAF, a flyover consisting of WWII Bombers, Fighters, Cargo Aircraft and trainers will take place that morning. The formation will depart San Marcos Airport at 9:15 a.m. to perform a celebration flyover of the following locations beginning with a pass over the Texas State Capitol at 9:30 a.m. After passing over the Capitol, the flight will flyover the University of Texas, Camp Mabry, Buda, Kyle, San Marcos, New Braunfels and all the military bases in San Antonio before returning to San Marcos at 10:30 a.m.

For complete event details, visit www.spiritof45centex.com.
