Bond project at Hemphill Elementary School and Simon Middle School

The Hays CISD Board of Trustees unanimously approved a guaranteed maximum price of $26,929,942 for the bond projects at Hemphill Elementary School and Simon Middle School at its May 19 meeting.

According to agenda documents, the Hemphill expansion consists of a single-story fifth grade academic addition, renovations to the cafeteria, library, music and administrative rooms, as well as on-site parking modifications for a total of $14,886,437.

The Simon project will include a single-story academic addition and a single-story weight room and fine arts addition, totaling approximately 19,800 gross square feet (GSF). There will also be renovations to the administration, art and athletic locker rooms for 4,900 GSF, on-site berm modifications and a new drive loop for a total of $12,043,505.

Bond project at Kyle Elementary School and Tom Green Elementary School

A guaranteed maximum price of $77,846,767 was approved 7-0 for the bond projects of Kyle and Tom Green elementary schools at the Hays CISD Board of Trustees May 19 meeting.

Agenda documents stated that Kyle will receive renovations to the administrative area and the cafeteria, as well as a library addition for $43,629,456, while Tom Green is slated for an admin addition and renovation, a cafeteria expansion, special education and library renovations and more for $34,217,311.

“This is when we advance those architect fees early for these two projects,” said trustee Byron Severance. “By advancing those dollars, I think it paid off to the tune of probably $4-5 million.”

JHS alumni earns top honors at collegiate meet

Former Johnson High School student Josh Blalock received the Conference USA Men’s 400 hurdles championship with a time of 51.91 seconds. Blalock is currently attending Liberty University.

Additionally, former Jaguar and current University of Texas at Arlington student Ethan Saenz received the bronze medal in the men’s pole vault at the Western Athletic Conference championships.

Final Coin of Excellence awarded

On May 19, Hays CISD Superintendent Dr. Eric Wright awarded the school year’s final Coin of Excellence to Sunfield Elementary School library media specialist Denny Schulte.

Sunfield Principal Alisa DiPalma nominated Schulte for the award, stating that she is wonderful at promoting the library and reading and is “passionate about helping students think outside the box.”

Hays CISD honored the top 25 students of Hays, Lehman and Johnson high schools during ceremonies in the last week of school.
