Hays County resident Kathi Thomas today announced her candidacy for District 4 Board of Directors for Pedernales Electric Cooperative (PEC) in the 2022 election.
Thomas is running to bring strong leadership to the District 4 Board position.
“We need a board member who will be a leader, think creatively about the future of PEC, question assumptions and engage members in important decisions at the co-op,” Thomas says.
Thomas is dedicated to a sustainable future for PEC and its members.
“I’m running for the board because I’ve been disappointed with the lack of member input in major policy changes, the lack of transparency, and what I see as a lack of creative thinking to find better solutions,” stated Thomas. “I hope to bring a more open vision of how our members can interact with the board, should I be elected.”
Kathi is a small business owner and longtime resident of Hays County, and has been active in the schools, serving in PTA at all her daughter’s schools, SHAC, DAC, as well as Band Boosters, and various levels of room mother when her daughter was younger.
She’s been active in her church, as a member of the Worship & Music Team, long-time coordinator for the CPC Thursday Noonday Concerts (Austin’s longest running free weekly concert series), and as a non-serving Elder, past moderator of the Christian Education and Worship Teams. In addition, she’s on the video team for livestreaming church services, which has helped keep their church together in worship throughout the pandemic. She is also a member of the Thankful Hubbard Chapter, NSDAR, Pan American Round Table (PART) of Austin, and the Dripping Springs Women’s Club.
Kathi continues to be active in the community, and in her spare time she enjoys gardening, reading, watching old movies, and, in non-pandemic times, traveling. Although semi-retired, she still owns and operates her special event design/planning company, specializing in events that leave a small ecological footprint.
Thomas lives between Dripping Springs and Austin with her husband of nearly 32 years, their daughter who is currently attending Texas State University, her mentally disabled sister, two dogs and eight chickens. Her husband owns a second-generation small business.
Kathi has run for the PEC board position twice before – once in 2019, when she was a very close second to Jim Powers, and then again for the special election to fill his seat in 2020, coming up short, there too. “Third time’s a charm” she said, with a smile and a wink. “Persisting is something I do well.”

The election for the member-owned electrical cooperative is May 18 through June 10. Members can vote online or via mail-in ballot.
