Hays High head baseball coach passes away

By Moses Leos III

UPDATE:

Hays High principal David Pierce sent a letter to the Hays community Sunday afternoon informing them of the passing of David Null.

Pierce said in his letter that the school has arranged for the Hays High counseling team to be on hand to support students.

"Students will be encouraged to visit our counseling center to receive support while at school if needed," Pierce said in his letter.

Hays CISD public information officer Tim Savoy said in an emailed response counseling teams will be on hand and will make contact with Null's classes on Monday.

Null taught A.P. Chemistry at Hays High and was also the school's head baseball coach.

Savoy said in his email Pierce had a meeting with baseball parents at 10 a.m. Sunday morning, and that counseling teams were at the school assisting families as needed.

Below is the letter from Hays High principal David Pierce

Dear Hays High School Families:

It is with great sadness that I inform you of the death of a Hays High School teacher, Mr. David Null. Mr. Null taught A.P. Chemistry and was our baseball coach. He passed away early this morning. Details regarding services will be shared once they become available from the family.

We at Hays High School are concerned with our students’ reaction to this sad event. In order to help them adjust to the loss, we have arranged for our Hays High School counseling team to be on hand to support our students. Students will be encouraged to visit our counseling center to receive support while at school if needed.

Please be assured that assisting our students through this difficult period is our priority. Thank you for your continued support. If you wish to talk with one of our counseling team members, please do not hesitate to contact us at (512) 268-2911.

Sincerely,

EARLIER:

The Hays CISD community is in mourning after learning of the death of Hays head baseball and assistant football coach David Null, who passed away Sunday morning.

Null was pronounced dead at 6:10 a.m. Sunday by Hays County Justice of the Peace No. 4 Judge Terry Kyle. According to Kyle, the cause and manner of Null's death are pending an autopsy.

Null, who was hired by Hays CISD in 2009, was tabbed to helm the Rebel baseball program in 2012 after longtime head coach Doug Ragsdale retired.

During his first season as head baseball coach, Null led the Rebels to the Class 4A regional semifinal. The 2012-2013 season saw the Rebel baseball team compile a 22-11 record and a 9-6 mark in 27-4A.

Last season saw the Rebel baseball team finish second in 14-6A play with a 13-4 mark. During his three seasons as head coach, Null compiled a 68-31 record and led the Rebels to three straight trips to the playoffs.

This story is developing. We will provide updates as information becomes available.
