The Hays Lady Rebels used a fast start - and an effective fast break - to beat Lehman 80-36 Tuesday night at the Lobo Den.
“We’ve been working on looking for our the fast break, and we had a lot of opportunities to run it,” said Hays head coach Danny Preuss. “We had really good ball movement…we didn’t have a lot of outside shooting tonight, but we didn’t really need to, we were able to break and get a lot of layups.”
The Lady Rebels pushed up the court quickly on offense, bursting from the tip-off for a 26-7 lead after the first quarter, gaining control they would never relinquish. The Lady Rebels improved to 9-2 in district play and 19-8 overall; Lehman fell to 1-9 in district and 4-17 overall.
Tara Ramsey led the Lady Rebels in scoring with 15 points, and freshman Gabby Bosquez added 14 for Hays, who held a 44-18 halftime advantage in the game. Lauren Fowler scored nine points for the Lady Lobos, and teammate Crystal Montoya scored five.
Preuss was also pleased with his team’s performance at the free throw line, where the Lady Rebels uncharacteristically made all 10 of their attempts.
“That’s unusual,” Preuss said. “We came in here shooting 53 percent from the line for the year, and made 100 percent tonight. That doesn’t usually happen.”
He was also happy with the performance of Bosquez, the young guard who plays like anything but a freshman.
“She’s a freshman in a junior’s body,” Preuss said, “and that’s a good thing. She just sees everything.”
Choon-Hee Chae scored eight points for the Lady Rebels, and teammate Jada Finister also scored eight point, six in the first half. For Lehman, Roslyn Walker scored four points - all in the second half - and Starr Rivers added four points as well for the Lady Lobos.
Hays will host Austin Anderson on Friday, while Lehman travels to Lake Travis.
