San Marcos murder suspect found dead

By ANDY SEVILLA

A man accused in a double-shooting that left one man dead and another critically injured in San Marcos last week was found dead in a Lockhart home Friday.

Cyrus Louis Amaya, 21, was the suspect in a Jan. 12 shooting at the Townwood Apartments that left Earl Edward Clark, 42, dead and Jay Ryan Guerrero, 20, with life-threatening injuries.

Police said Friday afternoon, Amaya was found dead with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Police obtained warrants on Wednesday seeking to charge Amaya with capital murder and attempted capital murder stemming from the shooting.

Friday morning, the Hays County SWAT team, with help from several other law enforcement agencies, attempted to serve those arrest warrants. That’s when police discovered the suspect dead at home in the 1000 block of Commerce Street in Lockhart.

Police believe both victims, who are from San Antonio, met Amaya in San Marcos to deliver narcotics. After the three met in the apartment’s parking lot, police believe Amaya led the victims to a secluded area, possibly to rob the men of money and drugs. That is where the shooting took place, according to police.

Investigators followed up on leads to identify a possible suspect. After obtaining the warrants Wednesday, officials from the Hays County Narcotics Task Force and SWAT began efforts to locate Amaya to take him into custody.

Intelligence and surveillance led authorities to the Lockhart home and officers attempted contact with Amaya beginning at about 9 a.m. Friday. After about two hours, officers with the Austin Police Department Bomb Squad placed a robot inside the home. That was when officers found Amaya dead with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Officers said Friday that prior to finding Amaya’s body, they did not hear gunshots go off inside the home.

The Texas Rangers are helping Lockhart police investigate Amaya’s shooting death. Last week’s San Marcos double-shooting is still under investigation.

This was San Marcos’ first murder of 2015.
