Looking ahead in Hays CISD football

Looking ahead

Hays Rebels (3-2, 2-1) vs Anderson Trojans (2-3, 0-3)

When: Friday, Oct. 2 at 7:30 p.m.

Where: Bob Shelton Stadium

Last week: Hays 46, Lehman 9; Akins 28, Lehman 13

Last meeting (2014): Hays 27, Anderson 14

Players to watch:

Hays QB Cody Reiley, RB Cody Gandy, RB Cade Powell, WR Dustin Bruno, WR Brandon Hunter, OL Logan Pool, OL Peyton Steele, DL Johnson Elrod, DL Dale Caswell, LB Coby Brown, LB Taylor Friesienhahn, DB Da’Quonta Crayton, DB Josh Saucedo

Anderson – QB Genuwayne Garza, RB Trey Espinoza, RB Keith Robertson, WR Tom Harrison, WR James Baran, WR Jacob Graves, DT Evan Williams, DB Eric Slatter, EB Sam Mitchell

Intangibles: With a two game win streak in hand, Hays now readies for the final half of the regular season as they push for a possible playoff berth. First up is Anderson that's coming off a vicious three game stretch where they were outscored 143-37. Anderson is led by QB Garza, who leads the Trojans in rush and pass yards. Anderson will go up against a Hays defense that's gained momentum over the last two weeks, holding Del Valle and Lehman to 25 total points. On offense, Hays continues to find success despite the loss of Braeden Kent. RB Gandy continues to shoulder the load, aided by Powell and QB Reiley himself. The Rebels are opposite an Anderson defense that's had struggles at times stopping the run.

Looking ahead

Lehman Lobos (0-5, 0-3) at Lake Travis Cavaliers (4-0, 2-0)

When: Friday, Oct. 2 at 7:30 p.m.

Where: Cavalier Stadium

Last week: Hays 46, Lehman 9; Lake Travis 64, Del Valle 0

Last meeting: Lake Travis 51, Lehman 14

Players to watch:

Lehman – QB Jacob Zamora, QB/WR Jeremiah Brown, RB Bryan Mendoza, OL Brian Prickett, WR Jonathan Whited, WR Chastin Evans, WR Keaton Miles, DL Cody Richter, LB Kacey Santos, DB Austin Lakey, DB Edward Arana

Lake Travis – QB Charlie Brewer, RB Abe Willows, WR Cade Green, WR Maleek Barkley, OL Griffin Lemley, DT Tevin Paul, DE Sammy Ochoa, CB Hudson Fife

Intangibles: What has become a trying season for the Lehman Lobos may get a little tougher Friday. Lehman will travel to play Lake Travis, which boasts one of the more prolific offenses in the area. The Lobo defense will be tasked with stopping QB Brewer through the air and RB Willows on the ground. The duo have accounted for 70 percent of the Cavs' 1,931 yards of total offense through four games. Lehman's defense, which has given up over 400 total yards of offense in all but one game, must find a way to halt the Cavaliers. It will be up to the experience of the Lobo defense, including Santos and Lakey to come up with stops. On the other side, Lehman's young offense will need to limit the miscues and self-inflicted wounds to find momentum. Thus far through five games, Lehman has only gained 1,073 total yards with QB/WR Brown accounting for 428 of it. Lehman will attempt to avoid the first 0-6 start in program history.
