School briefs: Oct. 28, 2015

What’s in a name?

Interested persons only have until Oct. 30 to submit their name suggestions for Hays CISD’s sixth middle school. The Hays CISD Board of Trustees-appointed Middle School #6 Naming Committee is meeting now to make a recommendation regarding the schools name. While there is still time for name suggestions, nominations must be received by 4:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30.

Visit www.hayscisd.net/name to learn more about the committee and naming process, and to submit your name idea. The committee could make a recommendation or recommendations as early as November, with the board approving the school’s name as early as December.

The Something Tigers

While the name selection process continues, students who are most likely to attend the new middle school have selected the Tigers as the new mascot.

The board heard a presentation regarding the selection process of the mascot and colors for the new school. Earlier this fall, Principal Thad Gittens conducted polls with 5th to 7th graders who are likely to be the campus’s first students when it opens in August.

Those students selected mascot, the Tigers, and the colors Royal Blue and Black

Board saves $1.5M in Bond Refund

The Hays CISD board’s approval of refunding approximately $9.1 to $9.4 million of outstanding bonds could lead to a savings of about $1.5 million. Refunding bonds, in financial language, equates to refinancing debt. The district utilizes bonds to pay for buildings and facilities in the district and other capital needs items.
