School hours to change for Hays CISD
Hays CISD elementary school students will begin their day 10 minutes earlier come Jan. 5, this according to a Hays CISD press release.
The 7:30 a.m. start time is a result of House Bill 2610, which changed the language regarding the minimum time students must be in school. The time is now measured by the number of instructional minutes, not number of school days.
The new law will allow districts to bank time and avoid make up for bad weather days Tim Savoy, Hays CISD public information officer, said in the release.
A school must have 420 minutes to avoid a make-up day and 120 to 180 minutes for delayed starts, Savoy said in the release.
By adding 10 minutes to each day elementary schools will have two and a half days worth of time saved up. The high schools and middle schools are already banking four to six days due to their long days.
All elementary bus schedules will begin 10 minutes earlier. There will be no changes to start times at high school, middle school or dismissal times. Exact bus schedules will be available Jan. 4 on the Hays CISD parent portal.
