Staff Report
Nine Lehman High School Texas Association of Future Educators (TAFE) students attended regional competition at the University of Texas, qualifying four teams to advance to state. Alyssa Tijerina and Makenzie Bostick led the way, placing 1st in Researching Learning Challenges, as they wrote a research paper on Special Education and presented their findings. Sarah Gonzales and Lexie Celis took 2nd in Impromptu Teaching, being given a 5th-grade history TEK, ten preparation minutes, then 15 minutes to present their lesson. It’s the girls’ second year in the program and second trip to state.
Mariah Guajardo took 2nd in Exploring Support Service Careers focusing on social work, her effort including eight hours of interviewing the LHS social worker and doing a presentation on the interviews. Sara Lunan took 2nd in K-3 Children’s Literature, writing, illustrating, and reading a story she titled, “Tim the Terrific,” in which she focused on accepting others for their differences.
LHS Family and Consumer Services teacher (and TAFE Sponsor) Betsy Slemmons said the students showed they’ve “taken the program to the next level, working harder than ever in partnerships with Tobias, Fuentes, the LHS PEP Center, and HCISD Early Learning Center.” Slemmons noted these students will one day fill the shoes of retiring HCISD classroom teachers.
