Patrick Luckett of Buda recently returned to Austin after participating in an Honor Flight Oct. 23-24 to Washington D.C.
During the visit, the group visited Arlington National Cemetery and witnessed the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
Luckett served in the Marines and was part of the clean up crew after the battle at Guam. In February 1945, he landed on Iwo Jima as part of the Third Marine Division. He witnessed the raising of the flag on Mount Suribachi. He was wounded when he and another Marine crawled back to rescue a friend who was wounded in the field. A grenade exploded over their heads, covering both of them in shrapnel. Luckett received a Purple Heart for his injuries.
Luckett graduated from Wichita Falls High School in May 1942, and was part of the senior class when Pearl Harbor was attacked in December 1941.
After the war, Luckett attended Baylor University on the GI bill. He met Eleanor Dann and they married in 1946; the two were married nearly 61 years before her death in 2007. They had four children.
Luckett moved from Austin to Hays County in July 2014 to be closer to his children and grandchildren.
