It’s nearing the end of October, so that means it’s time again for All Hallow’s Read! Neil Gaiman, author of quite a few creepy novels, made up this day as a reason for people to give each other scary books. The Buda Public Library is happy to lend out creepy books all year round! (Cue maniacal laughter)
Stephen King is the king of the scary novel. There are so many to choose from but let’s go back to the beginning of his illustrious, nightmare-inducing career. Carrie was one of the first King novels I read. In this story, Carrie, bullied by her schoolmates and abused by her fanatically religious mother, exacts revenge upon the community after her power of telekinesis reveals itself. If reading the story isn’t enough for you, I suggest listening to our audio book version, narrated by Sissy Spacek, who portrayed Carrie in the way too scary to watch movie adaptation.
If you want something even more classic, look to the original goth, Edgar Allan Poe. My first Poe experience was seeing an adaptation of “The Raven” in The Simpsons’ annual “Treehouse of Horror” episode. Even with the animated fun of the show, the somber, grief-stricken tone of the poem reaches out. We have several collections of Poe’s work, including a great graphic novel of “The Tell-Tale Heart.”
Sometimes it’s fun to be scared in the safety and comfort of your own home. As All Hallow’s Read says “Give a scary book, spread the joy, share the terror!”
Happy Halloween from the Buda Public Library!
