Back to school supply lists are on everyone's mind these days. Texas's Sales Tax Holiday is this weekend, Aug. 7-9. During the Tax Free Weekend, items like school supplies, clothing and footwear are tax free. So, if someone spends $100, they save $8.
The Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts said all sales of qualifying items made during the holiday period qualify for the exemption, including items sold online, by phone or by mail. Layaway plans can be used again this year to take advantage of the savings.
According to the National Retail Federation’s annual survey, families with children in grades K-12 plan to spend an average of $630 on back-to-school shopping. Consumers will also be purchasing school supplies such as notebooks, folders, pencils, backpacks and lunchboxes. Total spending for K-12 and college is expected to reach $68 billion.
