Mock Battle of Medina coming to Buda in September

Staff Report

During the upcoming Fajita Festival Cook-off Fiesta, volunteers are welcome for the reenactment of The Battle of Medina. The biggest and bloodiest battle ever fought on Texas soil, this battle was part of the Mexican War of Independence. Tejano ancestors, under the leadership of Bernardo Gutierrez de Lara, proclaimed Texas Independence on April 6, 1813.

The 83rd Texas State Legislature officially recognized this First Republic in House Resolution 709. This event is not only entertaining but educational as well and is presented as historically accurate as possible. This story was approved by the State Board of Education and is now to be taught in Texas Schools in the 7th grade.

Anyone may participate providing proper period attire is worn. Dress should be Native American, 1800 Tejano, early Texas pioneer or Spanish/Mexican Soldier. Children are also welcome. Out of town reenactors will be given an allowance for travel expenses.

The fiesta is scheduled for Sept. 25-26 in Buda. The time of the reenactment, presented by the Medina Historical Society and the Buda Area Chamber of Commerce, is yet to be determined.
