Bowie blasts Lehman 52-7

By Kyle Lehnick

Due to District 14-6A’s large size of nine teams, the Lehman Lobos began district play Friday as they hosted the Bowie Bulldogs at Shelton Stadium.

But Bowie proved too much for Lehman as the Bulldogs claimed a 52-7 win.

After preliminary rain soaked the field, play began as scheduled.

A 22-yard pass and catch from Lehman’s Jacob Zamora to Jeremiah Brown started the opening series of the game. After that drive stalled, however, the Bulldogs then marched down the field on a 55 yard, 11 play drive to put the first score on the board.

After an interception thrown by Zamora on the following drive, the defense stepped up and ripped the ball from Bowie’s Ramos on a quarterback scramble. Lehman’s Carlos Villarreal picked it up and ran 65 yards to score the sole Lobo touchdown of the game.

With the score knotted at 7-7, Bowie began its offensive onslaught. Bowie successfully ran the ball with two different running backs – Dee Threadgill and Desmond Young. Both players traded carries with Threadgill getting the lion’s share. Young busted a 32-yard run to kick-start the second Bulldog drive. Back up quarterback Matthew Wheeler punched it in on third and goal from the 1. On the day, Bowie had 362 yards rushing and three rushing touchdowns.

Lehman’s next two possessions resulted in turnovers. Bowie’s Matthew Dickey hauled in two interceptions and Lehman gave up the ball three times before six minutes were left in the first half. Bowie took full advantage of the turnover opportunities, choosing to air the ball out on consecutive 20-plus yard touchdown passes. Ramos tallied 126 yards passing with three total touchdowns passes.

The Lobos halted their turnover woes but struggled to move the ball. The home team went to the locker room down 42-7 after a 16-play Lobo drive came up empty on the final drive of the first half.

After receiving the second half kickoff, Bowie’s Threadgill gashed the Lobos for an 80-yard touchdown run on the first play from scrimmage. That play constituted most of Threadgill’s 107 rushing yards.

With a 49-7 lead, the Bulldogs pumped the brakes, while Lehman picked up a few first downs running quarterback draws. The Lobos totaled 130 yards of offense on the day. Lehman wide receiver Jeramiah Brown took several direct snaps at quarterback and led the Lobo rushing attack with 64 yards.

Zamora’s passing game was off as he threw for only 33 yards, two interceptions and was three for eleven on the day.

Bowie kicked a 22-yard field goal with 6:27 remaining in the third quarter where the score settled at 52-7.

The Lobos will be looking to rebound at Akins on Thursday. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at the Toney Burger Stadium.
