The Taylor Lady Ducks bested the Lehman Lady Lobos at the Lobo Den Monday night in an eye-opening 3-1 match.
Head coach Candace Warr said hitting errors in the second set led to Lehman’s shortcoming. The Lady Lobos won the first set 25-14, but Taylor claimed the final three sets, 17-25, 18-25, and 10-25.
“We’re doing more than what most people expect out of us,” Warr said. “We need to prove to everybody that we can be a winning team.”
Warr praised the Lady Lobos for their victory in the first set. She said she wanted the team to maintain momentum from set to set.
“My expectations will be set high and I know they’re ready for that,” Warr said.
Sophomore Kaylee Wipff said “talking louder [on the court] and coming together as a family” will improve the team’s game this year.
Sophomore Natalie Herrera also said the key to coming together is communication.
More than half of Lehman’s varsity volleyball team comprises of underclassmen.
“There’s a lot of young players, and we’re learning how to come together as a unit,” said Senior Natalia Barajas. “We’re meshing a lot better than we did last year.”
The upcoming school year means even more practice for the Lady Lobos. Coach Warr and some of the players are confident the team can juggle volleyball and class work.
“We’re student athletes for a reason,” said Barajas. “As long as we get what we have to get done in the classroom, everything will fall into place on the court.”
Lehman will host Austin High at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday in the Lobo Den.
