Lehman defeats Champion

By Rafael Marquez.

The Lady Lobos softball team put in a dominating performance and shut out the Boerne Champion Lady Chargers at home on Friday night. The final score was Lady Lobos 6, Lady Chargers 0.

The Lady Lobos defense promptly dispatched the first three Charger batters to open up the game.

Lehman scored four runs in the first inning. The volley of Lobo hits started with a double by left fielder Clarissa Rayos. Alexis Trotter also got on base. Pitcher Sam Villegas’ solid line drive to center field drove in those first two runners.

Lehman catcher Kynslee Noriega hit a pop fly to center and loaded the bases. Loren Pizzini drove in two additional runs for Lehman. At the end of the first, the score stood at Lehman 4, Chargers 0.

The next Lobo score would come on the feet of Trotter, who ran home from second in the third inning thanks to a hit from Noriega. Heading into the fourth inning, the score was Lobos 5, Champion 0.

The Lobos scored again in the fifth inning. Trotter was walked and promptly stole second and then third base. Villegas contributed a single that allowed Trotter to score bringing the run total to Lehman 6, Chargers 0.

Things got a little dicey for the Lobos at the top of the seventh, but it was a case of too little too late in the game. The Lobo defense, thanks in part to a great back handed catch by center fielder Trotter, was able to hold off the Chargers and secure the win.

The Lady Lobos are currently 5-4 and are fighting their way into the playoffs.

Editor’s note: Prior to Friday’s game, Champion presented the softball team with a floral arrangement to honor JV player Gaby Montoya.
