After sweeping through the first three district series, the Hays Rebel baseball team fell to Seguin in a pair of close losses last week.
In Tuesday night’s game in Seguin, the Rebs gave up a run in the first with a costly error after two outs. Rebel pitcher Tyler Woodmansee then held the Matadors until a single and a triple in the sixth padded the lead.

Athen Schultz singled, stole second and moved to third on a Justin Montana line drive. Zach Ibarra pushed Schultz to the plate with a single. The rally died after a Mike Gonzales single and a game ending play at third on Ibarra. The Rebs(13-3) ended the night with a 4-1 district record and tied with the Matadors for the lead, giving the winner of Friday night’s game the outright lead.
Back at Rebel Field on Friday, the fans were treated to a beautiful pitching duel between Rebel Mike Gonzales and Seguin pitcher, Bubba Kilchriest. The Rebs managed a run in the fourth after Nate Scott singled, moved to second on a deep fly ball by David Riojas and scored on Justin Diaz RBI single.
Kilchriest then retired nine of the last ten Rebel hitters to hold Hays to the lone tally.
Gonzales pitched well through six innings, garnering six strikeouts and allowing only three hits.
However, a Rebel error in the fifth generated an unearned Seguin run. Gonzales left in the seventh after issuing a walk to the leadoff hitter. Woodmansee struck out three, but scattered three walks and a timely hit for the Matadors to finalize the score at 4-1.
The Rebels, 13-4 and 4-2, seek to get back on the winning track this week against Boerne Champion on Thursday at Boerne and Saturday at Rebel field at noon.
