Dahlstrom math teacher finalist for Excellence In Education

SUBMITTED REPORT

Dahlstrom Middle School teacher Cody Mize is one of just five secondary teachers in Texas in the Rising Star category to make it to the final round of the Excellence in Education awards program.

As a finalist, Mize is already a winner, earning $1,000 for himself and $1,000 for Dahlstrom.

If he wins the statewide award, it means an additional $5,000 for himself and $5,000 for Dahlstrom.

The Rising Star Award honors exceptionally promising teachers with less than 10 years of experience.

“Cody Mize exemplifies the best not only in teaching but the best in human nature! He is a genuinely kind-hearted, generous, respectful individual that is concerned more about others than himself,” Principal Rod Treviño said.

“Cody’s infectious, wonderful attitude has transformed our campus! From his friendly smile and high-fives to students every morning to locating a colleague who is having difficulty and offering support, Cody’s presence has changed the manner in which other teachers comport themselves. He has become a mentor to many staff.”

Mize began his teaching career with Hays CISD in 2008. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Education from the University of Central Arkansas. He is certified in both math and science.

Though he is only in his first decade of teaching, Treviño considers him a “master teacher.”

“Evidence of his outstanding teaching is reflected in several ways: his instructional knowledge, his depth of concern for his students, and his positive, energetic approach to his work,” Treviño said.

The Excellence in Education is the largest monetary awards program for educators in Texas, and among the largest in the nation.

The statewide winner will be announced May 3.
