Water when you need it

Upwards of two inches of rain fell during the weekend, filling ponds, creeks, rivers and raising Austin-area lakes water levels.

It’s still not enough. The drought continues and weeks of drenchers would be needed to refill our aquifer.

But we are the lucky ones compared to Ethiopians.

That’s why a European design team came up with an ingenious and simple invention that draws water from the air from fog and condensation.

The contraption looks like a piece of modern art – made from bamboo and nylon net. It can collect up to 26 gallons of drinkable water a day. That might not sound like much to water foolish Americans. But, in Ethiopia, that is considered enough for a family of seven.

This invention could be an easy low-tech way to solve water problems there.

The only question? Will they be available here when Texans finally realize that water conservation is good for all of us.
