Congrats to Jason Poer, a 1994 Hays High School graduate, on being named the 2014 Elementary Teacher of the Year at Southwest ISD. Poer is the son of Audrey and Greg Poer of Buda and grandson of Tommy Poer, also of Buda.
Army Reserve Pvt. Javier I. Martinez graduated from basic infantry training at Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga. During the nine weeks of training, the soldier received training in drill and ceremonies, weapons, map reading, tactics, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid, and Army history, core values and traditions. Additional training included development of basic combat skills and battlefield operations and tactics, and experiencing use of various weapons and weapons defenses available to the infantry crewman.Martinez, a 2013 graduate of Lehman High School, is the son of Sofia Torres-Fernandez of San Marcos and Javier Martinez of Kyle. He is the brother of Sheila Martinez of Oceanside, Calif.

The airmen completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills. Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force. Wesley is the son of Sandra Santana of Buda and a 2005 graduate of Hays High School. Passarell is the son of Maria Briones of San Marcos and grandson of Alice Asevedo of Austin. He is a 2013 graduate of Hays High School.
