Fanny Howe at the Katherine Anne Porter House


Renowned poet Fanny Howe will be having a poetry reading and book signing at the Witliff Collections at 3:30 p.m. Feb. 20 and again at the Katherine Anne Porter House on Feb. 21 at 7:30 p.m. Howe was the recipient of the 2009 Ruth Lilly Poetry Prize.


She also won the 2001 Lenore Marshall Poetry Prize for her Selected Poems, and has won awards from the National Endowment for the Arts, the National Poetry Foundation, the California Council for the Arts, and the Village Voice. Both events are free and open to the public.


Texas Young Guns baseball BBQ fundraiser


Join the Texas Young Guns 11U select baseball team for some delicious slow-smoked beef brisket & sausage. The team is working to raise funds for the upcoming spring season and will offer BBQ plates at $8 each. Smoked meats will be served with homemade rice and beans, pickles, onions, and bread. The fundraiser will be on Saturday, Feb. 22 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Support youth athletics and grab a plate.


Juilliard joins Texas State


Texas State University will host a “Juilliard Joins Texas State” arts extravaganza. This is the seventh year for the event. Guests include Juilliard faculty and alumni who are among the most celebrated in the country: Metropolitan Opera singer Susanna Phillips, Met Orchestra cellist Julia Bruskin, Juilliard faculty pianist Aaron Wunsch, Broadway actor Creed Garnick, to name a few, and the Texas State Distinguished Alumnus and Juilliard Professor Wayne Oquin. Other leading artists scheduled to perform include violinist Yo-yo Fann and flutist Emi Ferguson. This University ENCORE Performing Arts event will take place at 7:30 p.m. March 6, in Evans Auditorium. 


Dr. Seuss Reading Day volunteers needed


United Way of Hays County invites volunteers to join together for Dr. Seuss Reading Day, an event to celebrate the famous author’s birthday by reading at local childcare centers. The Dr. Seuss Reading Day is a fun, lighthearted event to emphasize the importance of early childhood literacy. Texas State Concert Band


Texas State University will host its first concert band ensemble of the year on Feb. 19 at 7:30 p.m. at Evans Auditorium. The Texas State Concert Band meets in both the fall and spring semesters and consist of both music and non-music majors. The ensemble is conducted by band faculty, graduate students in the instrumental conducting program, and outstanding senior level music education students. The event is free and open to the public.
