The Hays Rebel baseball team notched a pair of shutout victories over the Clemens Buffalos in the second week of district play. Those wins allow the Rebs to maintain a perfect 4-0 district record and move to 13-2 on the year.
In the first game, Rebel pitcher, Tyler Woodmansee (4-0) powered his way past the Buffs with four strikeouts and two hits to pace the Rebs to a 2-0 win. The Rebs twice used small ball to score a run and provide the margin of victory. In the home half of the first inning, the Rebs loaded the bases on a walk to Zach Ibarra, a bunt single by Mike Gonzales and hit batsman to Nate Scott.
Ibarra would score on a wild pitch third strike with two outs that allowed David Riojas to reach first. The game stayed 1-0 through the fifth, when, with two outs, Jose Cerda and Ibarra walked and Gonzales stroked a single to left that plated Ibarra.
Woodmansee, aided by two standout plays by shortstop Justin Montana, closed the door by getting the last six hitters.
The second game of the series, played on Friday night at Clemens, saw Gonzales move from the outfield to the mound and totally dominate the Buffs with the first Rebel no-hitter in the last five years. Gonzales allowed only two Clemens base runners and struck out eight.
Justin Diaz led off the third with a hard ground ball misplayed by the Clemens infield, then moved around to score on Devin Palm’s infield single, a bunt single by Gonzales, a single by Athen Shultz and an RBI fielder’s choice by Montana.
The Rebs added insurance in the sixth when Ibarra doubled and later scored on Riojas’ sac fly and more in the seventh after Cerda reached third base on an error and scored on Ibarra’s single.
After an 0-2 start, the Rebs have reeled off thirteen straight wins and lead District 27 AAAA. They seek to continue their winning ways against Seguin in the third series of the district race.
