School finance trial ends, awaits judge’s ruling
Testimony and closing arguments concluded Monday in the pending lawsuit by school districts against the state’s system of school finance. The parties now await a formal ruling from state district judge John Dietz, who gave an informal ruling in 2013. At that time, he found the state’s funding of public schools was inadequate and inequitable, thus in violation of the Texas Constitution. Dietz reopened the trial on Jan. 21 to hear evidence on whether changes made by the 83rd Texas Legislature had any effect on the outcome of the case. He is expected to announce his decision this spring.
