Hays County officials said Wednesday afternoon no criminal or suspicious activity is suspected behind an early-morning residential blaze on Jan. 7 that left two middle-aged persons dead just outside of San Marcos.
“The circumstances at the trailer home were such that an exact cause of fire is still under investigation,” Hays County Fire Marshal Mark Chambers said Wednesday in a statement. “We have additional work before a definitive cause can be determined. We have not found any signs of an intentionally set fire at this time.”
Authorities were notified of a blaze that ravaged a mobile home in the 300 block of Oak Meadows Drive, near Hilliard Road, at about 2:30 Tuesday morning. Two bodies were discovered inside the home and have been transported to the Travis County Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy and identification, according to officials.
Officials have not released their identities pending positive identification by the medical examiner’s office and notification to next-of-kin.
Chambers said the mobile home had electrical concerns and an active wood-burning stove at the time of the fire, which he said could have contributed to starting a fire. No smoke alarms were found in the home.
“We urge people to install and maintain smoke alarms throughout the residence, especially in and around sleeping areas,” Chambers said.
