Chargers defeat Lady Lobos

By Taylor Tompkins.

Though they made a run before half time to close a wide first quarter gap, the Lehman Lady Lobos succumbed to a 12-point loss against the Boerne-Champion Chargers.

The Lady Lobos ended the first quarter trailing the Chargers 22-6. In the second quarter, the Lobos scored 10 points to the Chargers 6, but fell short in the final score, losing 43-31. They ended the half with a score of 28-16 and the third with 37-22.

“The first quarter killed us, bottom line,” said Lehman Coach Jamie Coy. “The second quarter we out scored them, the third and fourth we just flopped. So if we would have played and pushed their offense you know defensively, we could have pulled this game out.”

The Lobos had a plan of speeding up the Chargers offense and did a “good job” of making Boerne-Champion’s shooters take shots more quickly than usual, Coy said.

“We did really well at speeding up their offense and making them have to shoot with pressure or shoot a quick shot instead of letting them really get set and square up to the basket,” Coy said. “They’re a set shooting team so when they have the chance to get set and make that good shot, 90 times, it’s going to go in.”

Boerne-Champion made 12 of their 33 attempted two-point shots, leaving them with a two-point shooting percentage of 36.  The Chargers made 4 of their 15 three-point attempts, giving them a 27 three-point shooting percentage.

Those percentages compare to the Chargers season average of 31 percent three-point shooting average and a 44 percent two-point shooting average. No scorer on the team made more than 9 points.

The last time the two teams met, the Chargers beat the Lobos 60-41 and scored double Lehman’s points in the second and third quarters.

“They only beat us by 12 so we’re definitely showing improvement, which is always a good thing,” Coy said. “As a coach you have to focus on changing your goal based on what’s well for your team or what your team expectation is or what they’ll be able to conquer that time out on the floor.”

After the loss to Boerne-Champion, the Lobos fall to 6-8 overall. In district, Lehman’s girls fall to 1-8 and look to play their next district game at the Alamo Heights Mules home court Tuesday.

Coy said the team looks to employ some of the same tactics against Alamo Heights, who beat Seguin, another district team who sits at 3-6 in district play.

“We’re going to look to speed up Alamo Heights,” Coy said. “I mean Alamo Heights is the exact same play. I feel like ball pressure on them is even more beneficial than ball pressure on Boerne-Champion so we’re really going to look at speeding up their offense and pressuring the ball.”

Tip off for the Alamo Heights game is at 7 p.m. in the “Mule Dome” gymnasium.
