Donate a pint, O negative need critical

The Blood Center of Central Texas continues to struggle to meet the hospital’s need for O negative blood, which is the universal blood type that can be used by anyone in emergency situations. Supplies are not meeting the demand. Below are two opportunities to donate blood – of any type – in the Central Texas area:

Buda

The Hays County Sheriff’s Office is teaming up with the Blood Center of Central Texas and Walmart-Buda to host a blood drive on March 8. Blood donations go to over 35 hospitals in the Central Texas area, including Seton Hays Medical Center in Kyle and Central Texas Medical Center in San Marcos. The blood drive takes place from 10 a.m.-1 p.m.  March 8 in the Walmart parking lot in Buda. Make an appointment online at www.inyourhands.org - Group code: B416, contact Stephen Traeger at (512) 393-7373 or email [email protected]. Walk-ins are always welcome.

South Austin

The donor center is located at Southpark Meadows, 9500 S IH-35, Bldg L, Suite 800 (behind Wells Fargo).

Hours: Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday: 8 a.m. – 6 p.m., Saturday: 8 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Register online at www.inyourhands.org or call (512) 206-1266. Walk-ins are always welcome.

Basic requirements to donate blood include being at least 17 years old, weighing at least 115 lbs for whole blood donation and being in generally good health. Donors must bring a photo ID. The process takes about 45 minutes to an hour. Donors are encouraged to eat a good meal before their appointment.

Calling all young musicians ...

Think you’ve got what it takes? Enter the Youth Talent Competition with the Old Settler’s Festival and find out. The competition began in 2002 to encourage a new generation of folk, bluegrass and Americana musicians by offering performance opportunities and exposure at the festival.  The winner receives $200, a 30-minute set on the Bluebonnet Stage, and a 45-minute set on the Hill Country Stage the following year.  Artists must be 18 years old or younger and perform a 15-minute set. Only acoustic instruments are permitted – no amplifiers, electronics or drum sets. There is no additional fee to register for the contest. However, festival ticket rules apply – kids 13 and over are charged the same fee as adults with the exception of youth competition participants. Each participant must be accompanied by a paying adult. The Old Settler’s Festival youth competition takes place April 12 in Driftwood.
