Capital Improvement Plan gets green light

The board voted 6-to-1 to approve a team of representatives from SHW Group, Claycomb Associates, and Bartlett Cocke Construction to conduct a comprehensive review of Hays CISD facilities and create a Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) for the district. The study will look at both the structural soundness of all district schools, but also the educational adequacy between facilities. The resulting CIP will serve as a guide when planning future facility needs and major projects. Board President Willie Tenorio voted against the measure, saying he felt having an existing contractor conduct the review created a sense of impropriety.

Additional flood repairs approved for Buda Elementary

By approving the guaranteed maximum price for construction at Buda Elementary, the board cleared the way for more repairs at Buda Elementary, which was damaged in the October 2013 floods. Hays CISD maintenance crews have already completed some repairs, but more work is needed. This approval will allow that work to occur during the summer to minimize disruption to instruction.

Consultant recommends keeping print shop

Following its independent audit, Gibson Consulting Group recommended continuing the operation of the district’s in-house print shop.  The report noted that to sustain financial feasibility over time, equipment and facility upgrades were necessary. The report also concluded that the Hays CISD print shop could increase its prices to pay for upgrades and still remain the most cost-effective option for the district’s printing needs. As part of the consent agenda, the board approved a five-year lease for three black and white copiers and one color copier for the print shop. The lease agreement is based on an estimated need of more than 1.5 million copies per month.

Board adopts new math and science instructional materials

At the March workshop meeting, the board heard from a team of Hays CISD teachers who identified the recommended instructional materials and explained how they would best support the district’s high expectations for rigorous instruction. The adoption process included selection teams, a public showcase of possible materials, extensive research, and staff and public feedback. The board voted to adopt the materials.
