Lady Rebs earn win over Lobos 57-45

By Spencer Spilman.

The Hays High Lady Rebels hosted cross-town rivals, Lehman Lady Lobos in Bales Gym Tuesday night.

The Lady Lobos came out in a zone defense to try and slow down the Hays offense. To counter the zone, the Lady Rebels passed the ball around between guards Amanda Benjamin, Courtney Lord, Alexis Delgado, and Karlie Schroeder. From there the Hays guards found Jordyne Dugger and Jill Borreson, who together scored 32 points. Hays coach Danny Preuss was very happy with the play from his guards, saying “I think we might have set a record for assists tonight.” Lord led the team with eight assists as she found her teammates in the post from start to finish.

Although the Lady Rebels were breaking down the Lehman defense, the Lady Lobos were knocking down shots from long range to keep the game close. Guards Lauren Fowler and Olivia Marzullo both finished with 15 points, and their long range

three-pointers kept the Lady Lobos close as they found themselves down just five points at halftime, 29-24. However, the Lady Lobos came out in the third quarter in a slump. The shots weren’t falling and the team turned the ball over on sloppy passing. Coach Jaime Coy said, “We had seven turnovers in the third quarter when we only had seven turnovers in the first half.” Fowler and Coy were on the same page. “We kept the momentum up, and we were running in transition and passing to our teammates. I just think in the third quarter we weren’t moving the ball like I know we can,” said Fowler. By the end of the third quarter, Hays had a commanding 46-30 lead.

The Lady Rebels continued to pound it in the post and lean on Borreson, who finished with 19 points and 11 rebounds, and Dugger who added 13 points of her own. Like any rivalry game, neither team showed signs of giving up, and Lehman began to battle back behind forward Starr Rivers, who had nine points, and the shooting from their guards. They fought until the final whistle but in the end it was too little too late for the Lady Lobos, and the game was over 55-46.

Senior Jill Borreson talked about what the rivalry meant to her after the game. “Lehman will always play their best game, and that’s my last time playing them, so I really wanted to go out with a bang.”
