Scouts from Buda’s Troop 218 learned first hand about physics over the holiday break. The scouts, along with a few siblings and parents, enjoyed a private STEM-based session at iFly in north Austin during which they explored the physics within the wind tunnel. (Imagine pouring water out of a bottle and watching it go up.)
The boys also measured the frontal surface area of their bodies and weighed themselves, allowing them to calculate their terminal velocity – the wind speed at which they would freely float.
Once the wind started, they found themselves three stories high with 80-mile-an-hour winds in their faces inside an acrylic cylinder. New scout Ty Sarrels, shown above, of Manchaca said after a little practice, he got the hang of it. He even asked the control operator to “crank it up!”
Troop 218 has also been busy with other activities recently including caving, aviation, shooting sports and camping, according to Troop Leader Codie Smith.
