HCISD board appoints interim trustee
Following an application and interview process, Michelle Lopez of Kyle was appointed by the Hays CISD board Monday night to the vacant District 1 seat. She will fill the role until the May 10 election. Lopez indicated in her interview she would not run for the position, citing the need to spend time with her young son.
Graduating seniors: $50,000 available for scholarships from PEC
Applications are now available for one of 14 scholarships for PEC customers’ graduating seniors. Scholarships will be awarded to deserving seniors, with amounts ranging from $2,500 to one $10,000 scholarship. The funds can be used to pay expenses at any accredited university, college, junior college, technical school or trade school. Each scholarship recipient must be a senior in high school, and his or her parents or legal guardians must be PEC members. Recipients will be selected based on their applicant profile, including academic performance, community involvement, extracurricular activities and financial need. Applicants also will be evaluated on an essay. The PEC Scholarship Committee selects a panel of independent judges that determine recipients. Visit www.pec.coop/scholarship for more information. Scholarships for kids age 6-18 who volunteer
Kohl’s is now accepting nominations for its 2014 Kohl’s Cares Scholarship Program. The retailer recognizes kids ages 6-18 who have made a positive impact on their local community through volunteerism. Nearly 200 students will win regional scholarships worth $1,000 toward higher education. Ten national winners will be awarded a total of $10,000 in higher education scholarships, and Kohl’s will donate $1,000 to a nonprofit organization on each national winner’s behalf.
