Dinner and Grief: Life After Loss
The Central Texas Medical Center (CTMC) Family Grief Center invites the community to participate in its free “Dinner and Grief: Life After Loss” support group program.
Life After Loss is a program designed by the American Cancer Society to help bereaved people better understand the process of their grief and how to live through it in a healing way. It also provides a place for anyone who has lost a loved one or dear friend to share their experiences and to support one another during this trying time. Survivors of non-cancer deaths are also welcome to attend.
Dinner is offered as part of the process to recognize the empty chair. There is no cost to the participant.
The support group will meet on Monday nights for five weeks from Jan. 20-Feb. 17 at the CTMC Family Grief Center, located at 1313 IH-35 North in San Marcos. Sessions begin at 6 p.m. A combination of teaching, discussion and learning activities are used in the groups.
To register for a group, please contact Abel Rodriguez, LMSW, LCDC, at (512) 754-0322 or e-mail [email protected].
An afternoon of therapeutic art
Join Linda Meeker, bereavement counselor at Odyssey Hospice, for a look at healing after the loss of a loved one on Sunday, Jan. 19, at 2 p.m. at the San Marcos Public Library.
We all tend to have common reactions after the death of someone who was special to us. Among common reactions are: deep sadness, shock, anger, and even guilt. We can experience physical problems like loss of sleep, extreme tiredness, shortness of breath, or even changes in vision. While our reactions are common, how we move through these feelings is a very personalized journey that has no “normal” time line. Like so many of life’s challenges, when we actively work to move through the steps or stages of grief, sometimes the healing comes more quickly.
During this Sunday afternoon of therapeutic art, we will explore all of the common feelings we experience in grief and loss. Participants will be provided with all needed supplies and the opportunity to create a beautiful collage celebrating the life of their lost loved one, bringing on an awareness of their own journey through grief.
Linda Meeker, LMSW, holds degrees from the University of Houston and Texas State University. Her practice and teaching experience have focused on the healing aspects of art therapy with interests concentrated on end of life care, grief and loss, and hospice care. Ms. Meeker facilitates a Grief and Loss Support Group that meets Thursdays from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. at 1911 Corporate Drive, Suite 104 in San Marcos. The group is free and open to the public.
Have a Heart for Hospice annual luncheon
Funds will help CTMC’s upcoming inpatient hospice unit
Tickets are now on sale for the Have A Heart for Hospice Luncheon. The event will take place on Tuesday, Feb. 4 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the San Marcos Activity Center, located at 501 E. Hopkins St. Tickets cost $40, and proceeds will benefit the new CTMC Inpatient Hospice Unit and other hospice activities.
The Inpatient Hospice Unit is currently in development on the second floor of CTMC’s Women’s Center wing. It is being created to provide a compassionate, homelike setting for hospice patients who need hospitalization during their treatment or as an alternative to dying at home.
Features will include private, homelike rooms, 24-7 access for loved ones, a family counseling room and a communal living room where family can gather and seek respite. Additional amenities for families include reserved parking, a private entrance and 24-7 access to the hospital’s chapel, gardens and more.
The CTMC Inpatient Hospice Unit will be the first in San Marcos and will also provide private-pay residential care services.
Entertainment at the event will be provided by Texas State University’s VocaLibre, a group of singers who share vocal music from classic choral to popular covers. There will also be a drawing for door prizes.
The lunch menu will include chicken with lemon sauce, toscana rice, asparagus, bread, salad and cupcakes for dessert. Purchase tickets by emailing [email protected] or by calling (512) 754-6159.
