After a tough 35-34 loss to Schertz Clemens on Saturday, the Hays Lady Rebel basketball team recovered to defeat Seguin 51-33 at Bales Gym on Tuesday. Hays leads Boerne Champion by one game for third place in 27-4A.
Hays (23-10, 8-4) got the upper hand, opening with a seven minute, 18-1 run. They were guided by senior forward Jordyne Dugger, who scored eight of her game high 14 points in the first frame.
Helping was a defense that forced several Seguin miscues. Head coach Danny Preuss attributed success to outhustling and out-executing the Lady Matadors.

“We came out ready to play. We haven’t done that this year,” he said. “We had great defense and were executing on offense.”
Hays led 18-6 after a quarter, 32-13 at halftime.
However, the Lady Rebels struggled to find their rhythm in the second half. Turnovers and lethargic play led to Matador scoring chances. Seguin was led by senior Haley Gil, who scored ten of her team high 12 points in the second half.
Preuss credited Seguin with dictating tempo, but felt his team lacked focus and execution.
“We stood around and watched, until we hit a few free throws,” he said. “Then we built the lead back up again.”
Despite being outscored 20-19 in the final 16 minutes, the Lady Rebels held firm for the win.
Hays travels to Champion on Friday, then hosts Alamo Heights in the regular season finale on Tuesday.
