Cardiac kids: Lobos shock Eagles 4-3 in district opener

By Spencer Spilman.

The Lehman Lobo soccer team scored three goals in seven minutes to pull out the surprising comeback victory over the Cedar Creek Eagles in their district opener Tuesday night.

Lehman got on the scoreboard first when 14 minutes into the game, Alex Martinez found the ball at his feet in the box off of a rebound. He wasted no time finding the back of the net.

Four minutes later, Eagles’ Jason Aguilera tied the game at one apiece. In the 23rd minute, Eduardo Martinez-Loyola beat the goalkeeper and the Eagles went into halftime with a 2-1 lead.

Lehman came out strong but on the Eagles’ first shot of the second half, Oscar Rodriguez Casas made it 3-1 with a goal of his own.

The Lobos continued to battle, never giving up, and in the 64th minute, Rene Torres was taken down inside the penalty box and was awarded a penalty kick. The goalie never had a chance as Torres blasted the shot passed him and the Lobos pulled to within one with 16 minutes left.

A few minutes later, forward Michael Diers tied it up and the crowd went wild.

After the game, Lobo Coach Jay Sansom said, “I think [Cedar Creek] might have thought they had it, but our guys just kept playing.”

With the fans cheering and momentum on his side, Coco Balderas took a long shot with 10 minutes left and found the back corner of the goal, completing the comeback and taking a 4-3 victory.
