The cold weather might have slowed down the Hays High Lady Rebel soccer team, but they still pulled together to dominate Lockhart and win 1-0 at Shelton Stadium Tuesday.
The Lady Rebels dominated the first half with ball skill and spread out manuevers to hold off any possible scoring by the Lions.
The only score of the game came as the clock ticked to 26:01 by Hays Lady Rebel Mila Bustos. Minutes following Bustos’ goal, Lockhart tried to tie the score but Hays keeper Courtney Limmer stopped their attempt at 20:27 on the clock.
Precision plays by Hays ran the Lions all over the field, as Lockhart was unable to put together a goal, despite several shots on goal.

The Lions came roaring out at the top of the second half. There were several shots on goal by both Lockhart and Hays, with the closest attempt coming as 12:21 by Bustos. That goal was blocked by a diving save from Lockhart’s keeper.
A penalty kick granted to Lockhart at 7:35 was stopped by Limmer, keeping Hays ahead at 1-0.
Hays High head soccer coach Brent Holcomb said he put the team through a lot of tough tournaments leading into the season, as they travelled as far as Dallas to play tough teams. Some of the workout showed in Tuesday’s game.
“We played much better in the first half than the second, and part of that was due to a little disorganization and to Lockhart really hustling,” Holcomb said. “All in all, we played a good game.”
