Matadors gore Lobos, 8-2

By Spencer Spilman.

It was a tough night for the Lehman Lobos baseball team Tuesday as the Seguin Matadors came to town and walked away with the win.

Wasting no time, the Matadors came out swinging in the first inning. Two infield errors by the Lobos helped get the first run across for Seguin. The next batter, Travis York hit a towering three-run home run over the left field wall to make it four to zero after just one inning.

The Lobos got one back after Luis Jimenez made it to third base on a throw away and Mark Garcia hit a long fly ball to right field, sacrificing his teammate home.

Pitcher Justin Penny kept the Lobos in the game with three strikeouts. The score remained 4-1 until the fifth inning when the Matadors brought home another run after a Leh-man error.

Once again, the Lobos battled back as they manufactured a run behind a Jesse Garcia single and a Seguin error, but that was all they would get across the plate.

“We weren’t very aggressive in any part of the baseball game today,” Coach Toby Robinson said.

The Lehman batters struggled against Seguin pitcher Andrew Kuehne, who pitched six innings and struck out nine Lobo batters.

After Penny’s night came to an end on the mound, relief pitcher Garcia attempted damage control. But the Matadors put up two runs in the sixth and another in the seventh, effectively shutting down Garcia’s efforts.

Trailing 8-2 heading into their final at-bat, Lehman got a lead off walk to Ryan Tello. The Matadors retired the next three batters, finishing the game.

Robinson lamented the team’s performance.

“We didn’t play very well, and we didn’t make some routine plays,” he said.

Lehman looks to bounce back on Friday as they travel to Kerrville to face Tivy. The next home game for the Lobos is Tuesday where they will host Tivy.
