The Westlake girls basketball team (9-3, 2-1 District 14-6A) was stunned Tuesday night, falling to Hays 69-66 in double overtime.
The Rebels (9-2, 3-0) remain unbeaten in district play thanks to a team-high 14 points from Choon-Hee Chae.
Westlake was led by Bailey Holle’s game-high 23 points, but Hays put the pressure on Brooke Holle, holding the junior guard to just five points.
The Chaparrals jumped out to a 12-8 lead after the first quarter and led by five at halftime.
However, as Westlake cooled off in the third quarter, the Rebels were just getting warmed up and took a four point lead into the final period.
Westlake shot an uncharacteristic 58 percent from the free-throw line, making 21-of-38 attempts, and just 39 percent from the floor and committed 31 turnovers.
The Chaparrals found their groove in the fourth quarter, enough to tie the game and send it into overtime.
However, Hays and Chae were able to hold off the comeback.
Gabriela Bosquez and Karlie Schroeder each had 11 points for the Rebels.
Westlake had a good night on the boards, pulling down 48 total rebounds.
Brooke Holle led the Chaps with 12 rebounds while Jesse Turner, playing in her first game of the season, had nine to go with 10 points.
Emily Thurston and Blair Krieger scored 10 points each for Westlake.
The Chaparrals will play in the Jack Frost Tournament beginning Thursday in Georgetown.
