Hays Free Press Publisher Cyndy Slovak-Barton was released from jail earlier today when friends, family and co-workers donated nearly $240 to bail her out. She was arrested while at the Texas Pie Company just after 12:20 p.m. by Hays County Sheriff's Office Brown Santa program. They booked her on charges of "abuse of staff."
She spent about an hour in "jail" at the Hays County Government Center in San Marcos while her staff worked to spring her from the slammer. Barton herself kicked in a donation.
The funds will benefit the Hays County Brown Santa program, which provides much needed gifts and food for needy families around the county.
All total, Barton raised the most of any person arrested through Brown Santa and received a gift from Lt. Dennis Gutierrez, the Brown Santa coordinator for the sheriff's office, for being the top donation prisoner. Barton is shown here holding the hand-made wreath made by a HCSO employee.
