Pet Fest


Head to San Marcos Plaza Park (401 East Hopkins Street in San Marcos) for the 12th annual Pet Fest on Saturday, Oct. 11, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (with a Dog Jog starting at 8 a.m.).This family-friendly festival includes a Dog Jog 5K & 1 Mile Fun Run, vendor booths, live entertainment, K-9 police demo, pet contests, kids’ activities, a silent auction and more! Bring your pet (costumes are encouraged) or come meet and greet the homeless pets from local shelters and rescue organizations.  Admission is free, but it is requested that attendees bring a donation of dry pet food. Hootenanny on the Hill


Enjoy a 10K, 5K, 3K or 1K Fun Run at Fairway Fields in Plum Creek on Saturday, Oct. 11, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. The start and finish will be at the dog park, near Fairway and Haupt streets and there will be different age brackets. There will also be a BBQ and chili cook-off, scarecrow contest, pumpkin carving contest, Pup Trot, Star Dogs Talent Show, petting zoo, vendors and much more. Sacred Springs PowWow


The Sacred Springs Powwow will be at the Meadows Center (formerly Aquarena Center) Saturday from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. for a celebration of Native American culture that has been part of the San Marcos area for thousands of years. The event is sponsored by the Indigenous Cultures Institute — a nonprofit organization dedicated to the research and preservation of the culture, arts, traditions, ceremonies, and languages of the population collectively known as Coahuiltecans. The powwow features native dancers, drum groups, traditional singers, arts, crafts and indigenous food. Buda Farmers Markets


The Buda Farmers Market meets on Main Street in Buda every Saturday from 9-noon from March to October. Gray Gardens also holds a weekly farmer’s market at Willie’s Joint, 824 Main St. in Buda from 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Offerings include fresh produce in addition to fresh meat and seafood. They have also added a new market day every Tuesday at Willie’s Joint from 4-7 p.m. This is a smaller market than the one on Saturday.  See more information at www.graygardensbuda.com.


East Texas in Story and Song


Oct. 9 at 6:30 p.m. join author Joe R. Lansdale for a special reading and listening event at the Wittliff Collections at Texas State University. Joining Lansdale will be author and former Hays Free Press editor Wes Ferguson. Also on the bill is Joe’s daughter, singer-songwriter Kasey Lansdale, who will perform from her new album, Restless, produced by John Carter Cash. A signing will follow the event.
