Hays (0-1) vs. Georgetown (1-0)
When: Friday, September 5 at 7:30 p.m.
Where: Shelton Stadium
Last meeting: 1999 – Georgetown 24, Hays 14
Last week: Boerne Champion 44, Hays 27; Georgetown 29, Westwood 5
Players to watch
Hays: Hays: QB Braeden Kent, RB Cody Gandy, RB Jackson Effiom, OL Connor Lanfear, LB Emory Cuzze, FS Joseph Rubio, DL Johnson Elrod, OL Mateo Mendoza, WR Brandon Hunter
Georgetown: QB Ben Bottlinger, WR Camden Lapley, WR Logan Hager, RB Mookie Walton, RB Dakota Cahill, WR Beau Corrales, LB Matt Ray
Outlook:
It’s only week two, but a lot is riding on Friday’s game for the Hays Rebels. While defending home turf is critical, avoiding an 0-2 start is imperative. Hays will attempt to rebound against Georgetown, which was ranked #5 in the Austin American-Statesman’s preseason power poll. Components such as a fast start and fixing miscues on offense are vital. Perhaps more so is fostering aggression, especially on the ground. Gandy and Effiom will be crucial to success. The progression of Kent and his wide receivers is of vital importance. It must be done against a stifling Georgetown defense that allowed only 115 total yards last week. Meanwhile, Hays’ defense will see a similar theme from last week — a mobile quarterback and a bruising running back. Discipline will be needed to halt Bottlinger. Limiting third down conversions (and getting off the field) is a must.
Lehman (0-1) at McCallum (0-1)
When: Thursday, September 4 at 7:30 p.m.
Where: House Park (1301 Shoal Creek Blvd, Austin Texas)
Last meeting: First ever
Last week: Bastrop 48, Lehman 21; Anderson 33, McCallum 23
Players to watch:
Lehman: QB Jeremy Schilhab, RB/DB J.R. Torres, RB/DB Brett Wagner, WR/TE Jay Sayles, WR/DB Jon Herrera, DB Za’Quan Campbell, LB Jacob Tamez, RB Jameson Castillo, WR Tyler Hendrickson
McCallum: QB Sabian Cannon, RB Clement Jones, RB Terrance Mitchell, WR Rosevelt Mathews, LB Carter Fowler, DT Bryant Duran
Outlook:
It wasn’t pretty last Friday for the Lehman Lobos. Things will have to improve in a hurry this week against McCallum. The good news? The Lobos are taking on a wounded McCallum squad. The Knights allowed Anderson to score 20 points in the fourth quarter last week. The not so good news? Lehman will be tasked with stopping another power running attack. That’s where the Lobos must make strides this week. Strength in the defensive front seven will be critical as halting Jones and Cannon is the priority. Equally important is adjusting to the Knight’s high tempo offense. On the flip side, the Lobos must find balance in the run game. Castillo and Wagner are needed to alleviate pressure off of Schilhab. Lehman must also diversify its attack through the air. Look for Herrera to play a bigger role, along with Hendrickson.
