At the top of their game: 2014 Hays Free Press and News-Dispatch volleyball standouts

Player of the year: 


Morgyn Greer, Junior – Outside Hitter – Dripping Springs 


A University of Florida commit, Greer led Dripping Springs’ offense with 692 kills on 1,592 attempts and a .304 hit percentage; all are career highs. Greer has so far tallied 1,182 kills in her three year volleyball career  – and she’s still got one more year to go. Defensively, Greer had 46 blocks and a career high 259 digs. Greer was named to the UIL Class 5A state all-tournament team. 


Coach of the year 


Michael Kane, Dripping Springs 


Leading a team to one state tournament is an achievement for any head coach. Fifth year Dripping Springs Lady Tiger head coach Michael Kane has now accomplished that achievement in consecutive years. While the Lady Tigers fell short of their goal of a Class 5A title, Kane led his Lady Tigers to a 45-7 record. Perhaps more impressive was leading the Lady Tigers to a 12-0 mark in District 25-5A play. 


 


First team: Outside Hitters


Emily Ferguson, Senior – Wimberley 


Ferguson provided an additional threat to a consistent Wimberley offense. She tallied a team high 12 kills in Wimberley’s match against Liberty Hill on Nov. 11. 


Jaycee Smith, Senior – Wimberley 


Guided by Smith’s offense, Wimberley claimed its 18th straight district championship in a row. The Lady Texans finished the season in the regional quarterfinal round. 


Mackenzie Coates, Sophomore – Hays 


Coates burst on the scene by leading Hays with 276 kills and a .440 kill percentage. She also led the Lady Rebels with 66 total blocks on only two block errors. 


 


First team: Middle Blockers


Maggi Linker, Junior – Wimberley 


Along with Jaycee Smith, Linker provided a formidable front line for opponents to deal with. Linker scored two blocks in Dripping Springs area round wins over Schulenberg on Nov. 7. 


Ashley Waggle, Junior – Dripping Springs 


Waggle averaged 7.9 kills and 1.67 blocks per match. Her 87 total blocks led Dripping Springs defensively. Waggle posted a season high 23 kills in Dripping Springs regional final match against Alamo Heights. Was named to the UIL Class 5A state all-tournament team. 


 


First team: Setter


Kathryn Wristen, Senior – Hays 


Headed for Northwestern State in Nachitogches, LA, Wristen capped off her Lady Rebel career by averaging 24.4 assists per match. She also led the team in digs, averaging 7.78 per match. Wristen finishes her career with 3,287 assists in 360 sets, averaging nine assists per set. 


 


First team: Libero


Autumn Rounsaville, Junior – Dripping Springs 


A University of Texas-Austin pledge, Rounsaville led the Lady Tigers with 13.0 digs per match on only 22 defensive errors. Rounsaville tied for third most aces with 43 on the season.


 


Second Team: Outside Hitter


Kenna Nolen, Senior – Wimberley 


Nolen, along with Jaycee Smith and Emily Ferguson, made up a formidable Lady Texan offense in 2014. Nolen led the team with nine kills in a straight set win over Cuero on October 14. 


Shanon Park, Senior – Hays 


Continuing her career at Texas A&M Commerce, Park finished her final season at Hays with 250 total kills. She also scored 23 assists and 21 total blocks.  


Angel Cruz, Senior – Lehman 


Along with senior Cheyenne Morgan, Cruz led the Lady Lobo offense in kills in 2014. She was one of several seniors leading the way for Lehman. 


 


Second Team: Middle Blocker


Carlie Schmidl, Junior – Dripping Springs 


Tallied the second most total blocks on the team with 51. Scored 222 kills on 448 attempts. 


Taylor Britton, Senior – Hays


Scored 166 kills and maintained a 36.7 kill percentage in 2014. Accrued 41 aces on only 14 service errors. 


 


Second Team: Libero


Mattie Adams, Junior – Wimberley 


Defensive leader for the Lady Texans, Adams provided the backbone for Wimberley’s back line. 


 


Second Team: Middle Blocker


Madison Green, Junior – Dripping Springs 


One of four main weapons on Dripping Springs offense, Green scored 225 total kills and committed only 70 errors. Led the Lady Texans with 1,103 assists and only 12 assist errors.

Claire Gravell, Senior – Setter – Dripping Springs 


Ofelia Negrete, Senior – Libero – Lehman 


Alyssa Johnson, Junior – Outside Hitter – Dripping Springs 


Judianne Schoenborn, Middle Blocker – Defensive Specialist – Dripping Springs 


Caroline Croft, Outside Hitter – Senior – Hays 


Cheyenne Morgan, Middle Blocker – Senior – Lehman
