Rebel runners excel at district meet

The Hays High boys and girls cross country teams completed their season with top five finishes at the 14-6A district meet at Walter E. Long Park in Austin on Friday.

Only one runner, junior Esmi Fuentes, will continue on to the regional cross country meet on November 1 at Lynn Creek Park in Grand Prairie, Texas.

Fuentes finished in second place overall on the 5,000 meter course with a time of 18.33.

It marks the second straight year Fuentes has reached the regional meet. Last season saw Fuentes reach the 2013 4A state cross country meet; she finished with a time of 19:49 at Old Settler’s Park in Round Rock.

Hays High senior Jason Peed finished in 11th place overall, falling one place short of advancing to the regional meet.

“He ran a very smart and gutsy race,” Hightower said. “I couldn’t be more proud of his performance and the positive leadership he displayed each and every day.”

The Hays High varsity girls’ team finished in fourth place, while the varsity boys squad finished fifth.
