Rebel netters close out their season

Submitted report

The Hays Rebel tennis team took on the strength of 14-6A, the Westlake Chaparrals, in a pair of matches to finish out the regular season.

But Bowie proved to be too much for the Rebels, who lost their first ever meeting with the Chaps.

The Rebels were scheduled to take on the Dripping Springs Tigers, but Mother Nature had other plans and rained out the match.

“We were excited to play Dripping as we usually have a great match with them. But we can’t do much about the weather,” Hays head coach Debbie Cook said.

The Rebels followed with their last regular season district match against the Chaparrals. Hays played hard but fell to the Chaps.

“We knew going in that this would be a tough match, but playing that caliber team is what will make our players get better. I told them to play as hard as they could and the rest would take care of itself,” Cook said.

The Rebels finished in sixth place in the final standings for district tournament seeding, with Hays taking on Bowie in a rematch on Oct. 14. But the Rebels were unable to advance in the tournament and their fall season in the new district ended.

“I am really proud of our players. We have some young players who were playing very seasoned, experienced opponents,” Cook said. “We got better by playing these kinds of teams. We are looking forward to our spring season.”
