Buda sees sharp decline in sales tax

For the first time in almost two years, Buda experienced a double-digit sales tax revenue decrease; meanwhile, Kyle’s grew by more than 18 percent.


Buda received $288,879 in revenue this month, a 16.6 percent drop from its August allocation last year, according to state comptroller sales tax data.


In August 2013, Buda took in $346,453. 


Despite the negative growth, this year still Buda remains above tax collections it took during the same eight months in 2013. Buda has collected $3.11 million this year, a 15.5 percent increase over its $2.70 million allocation during the same reporting period last year.


Buda’s last monthly sales tax slump was in November 2012 when it experienced a 12.7 percent decrease compared to its November 2011 receipts. 


Kyle, on the other hand, experienced an 18.6 percent boost in its sales tax collections this month over August last year, the data shows.


Kyle received $496,713 this month, up from $418,723 last year.


So far this year, Kyle has collected $3.17 million in sales tax revenues, marking a 16.3 percent jump over its $2.73 million collection during the same eight months last year.


San Marcos, the county’s largest city and highest sales tax earner, collected $2.07 million in sales tax revenue this month, a 6.3 percent increase over its $1.95 million collection in August last year.


During the first eight months of 2014, San Marcos has collected a combined $16.06 million, a 4.4 percent climb over its collections last year, the data shows. During the same reporting period in 2013, the city had received $15.39 million in sales tax revenues.


In the eastern portion of Hays County, Niederwald received $1,848 in sales tax collections this month, just under $12 less than what it received in August last year. So far this year Niederwald has collected $14,520. During the same eight months last year, Niederwald had collected $13,614.


Niederwald’s neighbor to the south, Uhland, collected $10,479 in sales tax revenues this month, a 23.3 percent hike over its $8,501 collection in August last year.


So far this year Uhland has received $66,294 — 33 percent more than the $49,788 it collected during the same eight months last year.


In the western portion of Hays County, Dripping Springs received $145,721 in sales tax revenues this month, an 11.4 percent escalation over its $130,818 collection in August 2013.


From January through August, Drippings Springs has collected nearly $1 million in sales tax revenues, marking a 9.8 percent rise over its $910,003 allocation during the same reporting period in 2013.


Wimberley, which experienced a 7.3 percent sales tax increase this month over last year’s August allocation, received $82,065, compared to $76,517 in August 2013.


So far this year, Wimberley has received $466,817 in sales tax revenue, an 8 percent upturn from its $432,225 collection last year.


Hays County, which collects a half-cent sales tax on every purchase made, received $1.23 million this month; surpassing its $1.16 million collection last August by 6.2 percent.


Through August this year, Hays County has collected $9.3 million in sales tax revenues, a 6.9 percent jump over its $8.7 million combined collection during the same eight months last year. 


August sales tax figures represent monthly sales made in June.
